Bolton Wanderers 1 Aston Villa 2

BOLTON lost their unbeaten home Premiership tag for the season in a game they should have won by a mile.

They battered Villa for most of the second half but were unable to apply the finishing touch to their pressure, and the visitors grabbed their first away win of the season with an 89th minute goal by substitute Thomas Hitzlesperger.

Bolton had taken the lead after 21 minutes when El-Hadj Diouf hit his second goal in three games from a right wing cross by Kevin Nolan.

The first half was fairly even and Villa equalised five minutes from the break when Gavin McCann climbed above Ricardo Gardner at the far post to head in a deep cross by Lee Hendrie from the left flank.

It was nearly all Bolton in the second half, but Henrik Pedersen had an effort well saved by Thomas Sorensen after he had raced clear in the 58th minute, and Diouf saw a header hit the post seven minutes from time.

It was a real set back for Bolton who confounded the critics accusing them of a long ball game by playing some good approach work in which stand in skipper, Gary Speed, was often involved.
