Bolton surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead against FA Cup finalists Portsmouth but virtually guaranteed their Premier League safety.

Only an unlikely sequence of results, including three successive wins for Burnley, will send Owen Coyle's team to the Championship.

Coyle said: "We are not safe. We are nine points ahead and people can tell me about goal difference and everything else. But my focus was on winning today.

“I think I know what is required to take the club on. But the short term aim was to stay in the Premier League. In January we were one of the favourites to go down given the position we were in.

“We have not done it yet. We need another point minimum. We could have done it today and that is the disappointing thing."

When Ivan Klasnic and Kevin Davies fired the Trotters in front after 28 minutes, victory seemed a formality.

But Bolton have only once won back-to-back league games under Coyle's stewardship.

So, it was hardly surprising the visitors hit back in the second half.

Twice, on loan Aruna Dindane punished sloppy defending to earn Avram Grant's team a point.

Indeed, Portsmouth might have snatched the unlikeliest of victories when substitute Frederic Piquionne forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into an 84th minute save.

Bolton started brightly and ex-City keeper David James was forced to make several saves while Gary Cahill hit a post from close range.

And they got their reward when on loan Klasnic headed in his first goal since December 29 from Jack Wilshere's cross.

'Coyle, Coyle, sign him on,' chanted the home supporters who then saw another temporary Reebok resident, Vladimir Weiss, set-up Bolton's second goal.

Given his full Premier League debut in place of Chung-yong Lee, the City youngster teased Pompey's defence before sliding in the perfect cross for Davies to net from a suspiciously offside position.

The half-time introduction of Piquionne for Hassan Yebda certainly pepped up Pompey. And he crossed for Dindane to reduce the arrears after 54 minutes.

And 13 minutes later, Bolton failed to clear the ball on the edge of their box, Cahill was caught out as he tried to stop John Utaka and Dindane got ahead of Paul Robinson to convert Utaka's cross.

Davies almost snatched that elusive victory with the final chance of the game. But with James beaten, the captain's header bounced back into play off the post.
