CARETAKER boss Chris Evans says he won't apply for Bolton's managerial vacancy after Gary Megson's sacking on Thursday.
Megson's number two and first team coach Steve Wigley take charge for Saturday's FA Cup tie against League Two Lincoln City at the Reebok Stadium.
Burnley boss Owen Coyle has also played down speculation linking him with the job.
Former City reserve boss Wigley will pick the side while Evans has "overall responsibility for the football operation and affairs".
Wanderers have already started to receive applications for Megson's post.
Former midfielder Gary Speed, who left the club shortly after Megson's arrival in October 2007, is thought to be among those interested.
The respected Welsh international is currently coaching at Sheffield United.
However, Evans said: "I have no intention of applying for the job.
"My duty is only to work with Steve Wigley to try to place the club into a position during the interim change whereby we can provide a professional approach to every game.
"That way the club can make progress and gives the new manager a more healthy situation."
Evans knows he's likely to be out of work when Megson's successor is appointed-almost certainly before next Saturday's trip to Sunderland.
And he's remaining loyal to his former boss.
Opportunity
"I am grateful for the opportunity Gary Megson gave me to become his assistant.
"Gary is a friend of mine and will continue to be that.
"When he first arrived at the club, it was in a difficult situation and not too many have recovered from the position to maintain its Premier League status.
"Gary was brought in to save the club from relegation and his primary objective was achieved.
"The clear message I want to get over now is that there has to be a unification with everyone putting the best interests of the club first.
"That is the players, the staff, the supporters and the media.
"We need everyone on side at a time of this change.
"The supporters can create a 12th man and they need to be 100 percent behind the players."
*Former Wigan boss Paul Jewell remains favourite for the job though Italian Walter Zenga, linked with the future vacancy earlier this season, has emerged as a dark horse.
The 49-year-old has managed a string of clubs in Europe, including Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Dinamo Bucharest and current club Palermo.
However, chairman Phil Gartside is likely to go for someone with chosen Premier League pedigree.
Who would you like to see as the next Bolton boss? Have your say.

Tigers fan here. Stranger things have happened but why do I have a funny feeling that Phil Brown might just end up in the hotseat? I don't want him to leave the KC but there is a section of our supporters that do. I just hope we don't end up with Megson if Brown does decide to mmm-bopp it to the Reebok.
Paul Jewell would be more unpopular than megson.
Hughes has experience and would be a short term fix until he got the chance to manage a big club again.
Peter Reid? not sure he has it anymore....after all he is only assisting at Stoke and replaced megson there!!!!
Owen Coyle is doing a good job of relegating burnley.
Allardyce burnt his bridges "Club not big enough for my ambition"
Steve Mclaren,Youri Djorkeaff,Jurgen Klinsmann,Campo,Hierro,....and so on.
A big name would satisfy the fans but might not keep the team in premier.
Personally my feeling is that Gartside and Davies will not use the same headhunters who recommended megson but go with their hearts and appoint an ex-Boltonian or an out of work ex-city man....Hughes or Reid
Just hope it doesn't take them too long.
