It was Wanderers' worst performance since they were thrashed 4-0 at Villa last season - a defeat that plunged them into relegation trouble.
"We had a game-plan and didn't stick to it," said the former Portsmouth midfielder.
"It was very disappointing. But we've got a two-week break and we've got to come back stronger, fitter, faster and more alive for the game against West Ham. There are 13 games left, the next two at home and we know that if we compete then we will be alright.
"We have to look to kick on and finish the season well. We aren't setting ourselves a target and obviously our aim is to maintain our Premier League status, as it was at the beginning of the season."
