Bolton 2 Sunderland 0: Player ratings

CRUCIAL GOAL: Bolton celebrate El Hadji Diouf's goal

Al Habsi - only rarely tested but made saves at crucial times from Jones and Chopra 7

Steinsson - no wide threat from Sunderland to cause him any alarms. Good crosser of the ball 7

Cahill - tipped as a future England international by Andy O’Brien and another flawless display 7

A O’Brien - kept a tight rein on Kenwyne Jones and one of the few Sammy Lee signings that has paid dividends 7

Samuel - had little to trouble him defensively and finishing the campaign with confidence restored. Still prone to odd lapse in concentration 6

McCann - crunching tackles and full blooded commitment - Gary Megson’s type of player 7

Nolan - 'Mr Bolton' will be delighted with a result that all but secures the Trotters' Premier League status. Had his critics but no one has played more league games than the skipper 7

Guthrie - heading back to Liverpool in a few weeks and played his part in vital victory. Maybe too elaborate for his own good at times 6

Taylor - one of his better games, working tirelessly for the cause and creating several useful chances 6

Diouf - if this was ‘Dioufy’s’ final home game he went out in style. Brilliant goal, also hit the post and Wanderers will miss him when he’s gone 8

Davies - back from suspension and led the line magnificently despite the pain from his broken hand. Unlucky with first half header 7
