Bolton Wanderers

Portsmouth 3 Bolton 1: Player ratings

Jaaskelainen: Made some crucial saves as usual, but occasionally looked hesitant. The defensive communication between the back four leaves much to be desired. 6

Hunt: Caught out of position for Portsmouth's first two goals, but Sammy Lee has few other options until Joey O'Brien has fully recovered from tendonitis. 5

Meite: He will miss Abdoulaye Faye more than most if the Senegal star goes to Newcastle. Yet to gel with youngster Cid, but the team's defending generally was poor. 6

Cid: Conceded the late penalty that enabled Matthew Taylor to put the result beyond doubt. The Frenchman is committed enough, but it has been a steep learning curve in his first three games at this level. 6

Samuel: Did well enough, but the former Villa left-back must be wondering what he has let himself in for after Bolton's winless start. 6.

Andranik: His first Premiership appearance of the season and it showed. The Iranian found the going tougher than it was in his recent Asia Cup exploits in Malaysia. 5

Alonso: After two sub appearances, the Spaniard got his chance from the start because of an injury to Gavin McCann. Neat and tidy, producing some telling passes. But Liverpool have the better Alonso! 6

Speed: Bolton's most effective midfielder can't do it all on his own. How long will his 37-year-old legs keep him going for a full 90 minutes? 6

Diouf: Among Bolton's better players for the second match running. If he is playing for a move, then potential buyers will be impressed by his workrate. 7

Nolan: Given yet another position - this time playing behind Anelka - and didn't adapt to the new role. Needs to be in central midfield to function at his best. 6

Anelka: Showed why Portsmouth and West Ham could be poised for a swoop before the transfer window shuts in a fortnight. Scored his second goal in three games, and almost had a third in the first half. 7

Substitutes:

Helguson (for Hunt, 86): Surprisingly dropped to the bench after his goal at Fulham. No time to earn a mark.

Braaten (for Nolan, 56): Another player who needs time to adjust to the Premier League. Only showed flashes of what he is capable of. 5

Wilhelmsson (for Andranik, 46): Handed a Premier League debut at half-time, but struggled to come to terms with the pace. The Sweden international may have to be eased in gently. 5
