The 48-year-old former BT manager was joint chief scout with Liverpool when he finally ended his 13-year association with the club.
And he admits: "I could have stayed and continued as chief scout of Liverpool until I retire. For most people there couldn't be a better job but I'm ambitious to test myself in a more senior role.
"The offer to work with Sammy Lee at Bolton was, for me, too good to turn down," says McParland instrumental in bringing the likes of Daniel Agger, Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch to Anfield.
"I can honestly say I wouldn't have left had it not been for him."
Bolton continue to be linked with another ex- Liverpool star, Danny Murphy.
