Smith gives Ashes verdict

TOM Smith has been keeping a close eye on England's Ashes squad - he's been bowling at them in the nets in Perth.

The young Lancashire all-rounder is spending the winter with the ECB National Academy based in Perth and reckons England captain Michael Vaughan is in fine fettle even though he is unlikely to figure for England until at least the one-day series.

"He has been fairing very well in the nets with us," said the former Chorley pro.

"He just looks awesome when he bats. He hasn't really had too much time in the middle but that shouldn't be a problem."

Smith is also keeping tabs on the other selection issues for Thursday's third Test at the WACA - in particular the battle between Jimmy Anderson and Sajid Mahmood for a bowling place.

Close

"It's definitely a close one for the Lancashire players. If Saj plays, then Jimmy might not play," said Smith.

"I thought both bowled well in the warm-up game over the weekend, Jimmy especially. But all the lads seem to be putting in the hard yards to make sure they can help England get back in the series."

And that is certainly what `Smudger' has been doing for the month that he has been with the Academy in Sorrento Western Australia.

After a weekend off, yesterday's gruelling schedule involved early morning fitness work on the local beach, a 2,000 metre swim, a bleep test, further fitness work and then optional nets in the afternoon.

"I think I will go and lay on the beach this afternoon," he panted with a hint of a smile.

"But it's been a great experience out here. It's my first time in Australia, and everything about it has been brilliant."

Smith has been given rave reviews by the senior management on tour. Tour manager Guy Jackson said he is a "super kid who is definitely making the most of his potential."

Do you think Smith will make the full England team? Have your say.

i think if england are 3-0 down or 4-0 going into the last test he should be given a chance. no one else has done anything with the ball so why not give him a chance to show his potential.
