David Lloyd column

ITéS rotten news for Glen Chapple that injury has ruled him out of Englandés one-day squad as I thought he was going to get his chance of proving a real force for his country.

The Lancashire man has been successful for a long time now and he looked as though he was going to get his opportunity to impress England coach Duncan Fletcher in the one-day internationals.

Glen was savvy enough to know that there must have been a reason why he had been ignored at international level at so long. Heés worked hard and his batting has improved out of sight in the last two years. Thereés a problem place for England around No 8 and Glen would have fitted in very nicely there now.

I just hope he recovers quickly from his abdominal strain and gets another go as soon as heés fit.

England are already going to be without Andy Flintoff for a month, and his ankle problem is as big a blow to the country as Wayne Rooneyés metatarsal.

Theyére both kingpin players who make everything tick for the team.

Languishing

But England have still got a long way to go as far as one-day cricket is concerned. We are languishing in the bottom half of the world league.

The problem is we donét show any signs of consistency in the one-day game. One day we can beat Australia and then come away from India and Pakistan looking poor.

Ités this inconsistency that has Duncan Fletcher, and myself in my time as a coach, tearing our hair out. Our starts have been the worst in the whole of international cricket, except for Bangladesh, and we have to change that if we are going to give the team anything to build on.

Thereés a massive onus on Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss to get us those good starts.

We need to show in these one-day matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan that we are capable of winning the World Cup.

Iém still confident that we can. Now ités up to all the other England boys to go and win that other World Cup out in Germany.
