Former Lancashire and England cricketer Michael Atherton is one of six nominees for the Sports Journalists' Association's sports writer of the year award.

The ex-Lancashire player writes for the Sunday Telegraph while also working as a television pundit and is joined on the short list by the Daily Mail's Paul Hayward and Charles Sale.

The list is completed by James Lawton of The Independent, The Times' Martin Samuel and Henry Winter of the Daily Telegraph.
