Lancs duo miss out on IPL

MISSED OUT Jimmy Anderson

JIMMY Anderson and Sajid Mahmood have missed the final cut to play in this year's Indian Premier League.

Kevin Pietersen and Lancashire team-mate Andrew Flintoff headed the list of 43 players announced today who will take part in Friday's mega-bucks auction in Goa.

Both Anderson and Mahmood were last week among the 114 overseas players to put their names forward for the auction. However, the eight IPL franchises have cut that list down to 43 today, and the pair are not among the seven remaining England players.

The news will come as a relief to Lancashire. Although they had agreed to release centrally contracted Anderson and Flintoff, they faced a dilemma over whether or not to let Mahmood go for six weeks at the start of the campaign. The bowler didn't help his case by not telling the club he was putting his name forward.

In fact, Lancashire's early-season campaign could now be boosted by the return of Anderson, who is likely to be released by the ECB to play some domestic cricket before the start of the home Test series against the West Indies which starts at Lord's on May 6.

Former Lancashire all-rounder Dominic Cork has also missed out with Luke Wright, Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood, Ravi Bopara and Samit Patel the only other England players joining Flintoff and Pietersen in the final line-up.

Five Pakistanis were in the original list, but none find a place in the final one - after their country's Foreign Office refused to grant them permission to travel to India.
