Law's Lancs broadside

LANCASHIRE captain Stuart Law last night blasted the club's cricket committee for not consulting him about the decision to release Dominic Cork.

The Red Rose county announced on Tuesday that 37- year-old Cork would not be staying at Old Trafford beyond the current summer, bringing to a close a colourful five-year stay in the North West.

Law said that he was disappointed at the fact that Lancs are letting go a player "who can make things happen on the field".

"I know that I am going to get in trouble for what I am saying," he continued. "I know that there will be repercussions, I will be dragged into some little office somewhere in the next couple of weeks to find out what I mean by all these statements.

"But I am just telling the truth. I believe that Dominic Cork is a quality performer. Yes, he's 37, but there's life in the old dog yet.

"He's a quality performer. I wish him all the best.

"I would have liked to have been consulted, I am the captain of the team.

"I have got to walk out with these players, and if they are not in the best frame of mind I have got to deal with it. People sat up there drinking their gin and tonics don't have to. When a game is going nowhere you can just walk up to Corky and say `mate, I need six overs, you try and hit them on the head, get under their skin, do whatever you can'.

"At the moment, I don't see anybody else who can do that. But I am willing to be proved wrong."

Law chose not to attend committee meetings at the start of the season because he wanted to be left to on-field issues.

"I've chosen not to turn up to committee meetings because I'm not really bothered how hot my tea is or where my car is parked," he continued. "I didn't want to deal with anything but cricket.

"It's a shame it's come to this. We've got five games of hard-nosed cricket to play, and you want your team firing on all cylinders."

Law is hoping to captain Lancashire next season at the age of 40. Whether this outburst will have any impact on that, remains to be seen.

"What I've just said may affect my decision (to stay on). I may not have a decision. I've just told the truth."

A frustrated Law was speaking after Lancashire's batsmen had crumbled to 204-8 in two sessions against Yorkshire in the County Championship match at Old Trafford.

Steven Croft top scored with 56 when play got underway following a day and a half of wet conditions.

Cork received a rapturous ovation from the Old Trafford crowd when he walked out to bat.

What an unflattering photo of Law. Makes him look like erstwhile rochdale MP cyril smith!
I suspect the cork decision was announced now as a result of the schofield 'unfair dismissal' case a few years ago. Obviously law should have been notified that cork was going to be on the agenda, but I still feel it is time for the younger generation to be given a proper chance. Another sad season, maybe the biggest problem is the failure to 'doctor' wickets at OT to home strengths. Every other county does it. All games at OT end in drawers more or less.

The club needs sorting out. Its amazing to find that Law wasnt consulted. Lancs website has no record of Laws comments - censorship is worse than China's.Its also virtually impossible to make comments about the clubs playing performance on the website. One of the many reasons i resigned my membership after 45 years.

He has left himself open by not getting involved with the decision making process.
I cant see him going beyond this season, eyes are the ICL, he missed Lancashire's preparation for this seasons debacle through the money grabbing trip. There must be some more changes Sutcliffe is a walking wicket, try to win the Championship with Lancashire lads then it would mean something.

Stuart Laws got every right to be annoyed for not being consulted.
Dominic Cork is still a valuable member of the team, and if anyones entitled to give an opinion if he goes or stays it should most certainly be the captain.
So why didnt they consult him ? or cant they answer that one.

Get the boot in Stuey. You'll no doubt get a ticking off from Them Upstairs but you've said what's needed to be said.

I see in the current MEN poll that only 27 per cent of readers think Corky should have been released, 73 per cent think he shouldn't have been. Figures that pretty much speak for themselves!

Agree entirely with Stuart Law....as a player you would always want Dominic Cork in your side rather than against you..he always gives 100% and is capable of most things on a cricket pitch. It is a very short sighted decision from the committee, where are the experienced players for next season? Sutcliffe going,Law maybe going,Chilton and Loye hopelessly out of form.Dominic Cork is needed more than ever to guide the young players next season,in fact I think he would be the ideal captain.Cork should stay ..its the committee and the coach who should be going.Lancs recent record is abysmal and the changes should start at the top.How many young home grown batsmen have we produced in the last 10 years?.....none...something is seriously wrong at this club and when Law does leave...who is going to score the runs?
