But he won't be rushed deciding to continue as captain for a fourth term.
And Lancashire bosses have told him to make up his mind in his own time.
The opening batsman, with only one century to his name last campaign, said: "It's certainly a lot easier to captain a side when your own form is good.
"These are the things I will have to ponder. I know that my form with the bat needs to improve."
Chilton received the award because his captaincy played a big part in helping Lancashire overhaul a 37 point deficit in the County Championship title race.
Short
They fell agonisingly short on the final day against Surrey at the Oval, but Chilton said: "I am honoured and I guess the last month of the season went pretty well for us.
"I have not contributed with the bat as I would have liked, but I was pleased with the way I led the side.
"That isn't to say that I was solely responsible for getting us back into the race, far from it. It was a team effort with some very good performances from the likes of Glen Chapple, VVS Laxman and Stuey Law. It was just nice to be the link between everyone."
Although Chilly has only won one piece of silverware - the CountyChampionship Division Two title - since taking over from Warren Hegg in 2005, his captaincy has improved year on year.
"I am fortunate to have some experience and wise heads around me," he said. "But I certainly don't think there is any real magic about captaincy.
"You have very much got to follow your thoughts and instincts and you also need others to execute the plans you have set down."
Do you think Chilton should carry on as skipper? Have your say.

Those people judging have probably never led a sports team or a company (very similar as I do both, although my team is a Sunday league football team!) and therefore don't understand how hard it is to motivate people and perform.
Chilton has progressed year on year with his side and a lot should be said for that.
Well done and lets see you lift the championship next year.

at the end of the day. he's not scored enough runs. to be in the side. he's decisions when captaining the side in some matches. have been pathetic. and if he wasnt captain he wouldnt be in the side. get someone like law. if he stays or mel loye to captain lancs next year. and instead of getting oversea's players in for 4-8 weeks at a time. get a couple in who can play the whole season...
