The 33-year-old all-rounder from Skipton was the stand-out performer with 4-35 at Headingley, as the Red Rose chopped down the White Rose for just 144.
But all the headlines will surround England hero Andrew Flintoff, who also chipped in with an encouraging 3-38 off 11.5 overs.
It surely won't bother Chapple that much. After all, he will be more delighted by Lancashire's strong position in this game, that saw them take a first innings lead of two by reaching 146-2 at close.
But even still, he should take all the plaudits for his efforts that helped reduce the hosts to 0-2 after the first over, 1-3 after the second, and 22-5 in the ninth over.
"That was fantastic," said Chapple.
"Obviously after losing the toss, it looked like a good pitch to bat on, so it was just great to get a few wickets with the new ball."
Sajid Mahmood also claimed 2-24, while Muttiah Muralitharan took the other Yorkshire wicket to fall.
Snared
Flintoff, who is firmly on the road to his best again, mopped up the last three wickets, those of Tim Bresnan (39), Darren Gough and Ajmal Shahzad in a devastating 15-ball burst.
The 29-year-old snared the last two in consecutive balls - and when he bowls in the home side's second innings, he will have the chance to grab a memorable hat-trick.
"I was pleased to get through 12 overs," said Freddie. "I am playing a full part in this game, batting at five and bowling all the overs that I can do.
"There is still a little bit more in there for me, but I am quite pleased.
"I can bowl a little bit faster than that, but it is still coming out as I want it to.
"It was a wicket that was all about creating pressure, and trying to dry the runs up rather than blasting out the batsmen.
"If needed, then I can step it up, but as things stand I am happy with the way I bowled out there."
Footwear
Since his return against Sri Lanka A on July 29, and his bowling return on the second day of the Sussex game on August 1, the England star has been wearing an experimental boot.
He added: "It is one thing that we have investigated, the footwear.
We need to have something that allows my feet to work in the way that they do. I have had a scan, and Woodworm and another company have tried to find the best footwear for me.
"My bowling action is pretty unique, and I want a boot that will work with that as opposed to fighting it."
There have also been calls from England's new bowling consultant Allan Donald to change his action, and the way his front left foot lands on the popping crease.
Donald had said that his foot lands in a way that has bone and muscle "counter thrusting" against each other.
Flintoff said: "I don't want to change anything."
Lancashire opener Paul Horton, making his first-class Roses debut, eased his way to 82 not out at stumps, as he saw Mark Chilton and Brad Hodge (29) depart.
Flintoff added: "He is a fine player. He is not someone I have seen a great deal of, but when you see the results he is always there getting his runs.
"He played a blinder there, and hopefully he can carry on to get a 100." Tweet
