Murray hoping for Brit battle

John Murray
John Murray's European title hopes have taken a knock - but the British lightweight champion could be closer than ever to a clash with Kevin Mitchell, writes James Robson.

Manchester's Murray was set to face European champion Anthony Mezaache in America next month, but that has been scrapped after the Frenchman vacated his belt.

That sets up a Battle of Britain between Murray and Mitchell, who are number one and two in the EBU rankings.

But with Mitchell the No1 contender to WBO champion Michael Katsidis he may forgo the European title.

Either way, it is unlikely Murray will find a opponent for the vacant belt in time for his March 19 date in the States, with purse bids yet to be put out.

John Murry is an excellant come forward boxer, however the general public are missing out on him because his managerial team are playing second fiddle to Frank Warrens boxers. I,m really annoyed about this,as all we seem to be hearing about is Kevin Mitchell, before him it was Khan....Johns in real danger of being overlooked here,in very much the same way as Jamie Moore was.
Good luck though John...perhaps your Joe should think of doing a deal with the devil ??

Irsh Scotsman - Spot on mate, Murray is a great wear'em down boxer who will not give you an inch and not let you settle into your rythm, he is also one beast of a tuff lad. I know some very hard kids who spar with him and they can't tell you enough how hard and game he is and these are the kind of lads who are brought up to be fighters in their communities - not just sportsmen.

As for the management team, there does seem to be a problem with how they are 'managing' things. For me Murray is a ready made pelacement for the void that Hatton will leave and satisy the audience/Target market that likes that kid of scrapper.

If Hennesey doesn't wake up and get John the fights and exposure he desreves then JM & JG may well have to dance with the devil. It's one thing taking a stance and being loyal to your beliefs etc, but this is his career that could quite easily not fulfill its full potential if he is not careful: I for one hope that doesn't happen.

I have to question the merits of Mick Hennessy in all of this.

He consistently fails to match his boxers with the top boys, hence they don't challenge for the top belts. Remember Witter failing miserably to get a big fight (Tim Bradley was an unknown when he demolished him for the belt).

Even Carl Froch took years to get a shot, and even now as champ he can't get TV coverage.

This leaves me worried that similar fates will befall Murray, John O'Donnell, Darren Barker, etc.

totally agree with you the irish scotsman . Think john needs to start furthering his careers or otherwise he aint gonna become a household name . I think john is a real nice guy but got this feeling that Khan would just be way too fast for him as he can be quite static john . a good marker would be for him and mitchell to fight to see how he copes with another undefeated and hungry fighter . Like joe the glove says you cant knock Frank Warren as he get his fighters word title shots .

I've said this before but John and Joe needs to stop mentioning Khan and blaze their own trail. Maybe its the only way they can garner coloumn inches and if thats true then its a said state of affairs because John is better than that.
