The massive Manchester fighter went beyond four rounds for the first time to take a victory that shocked many ringside pundits.
Fury was confident he had done enough for his win in ten rounds, but fight promoter Frank Maloney described it as “disgrace to British boxing”.
Fury had promised to frighten the life out of his opponent in their Essex showdown.
But McDermott proved a hardy foe, surprising Fury who had labelled him ‘McDonut’ in the pre-fight exchanges.
He pushed the Wilmslow-based battler all the way, before the referee handed a 98-92 verdict to Fury in his eighth professional fight.
“I deserved it,” said Fury. “I had to dig deep but I thought I worked the hardest for it.
“I showed enough against a veteran of 30 fights – I had grit and determination and got on with my job.
“He made it tough and caught me a few times – he will give anyone a tough fight. I will give him a rematch.”

He proved he can take a dig, he proved he can do the rounds, he proved he can brawl, he outworked him. Maybe improve with the accuracy and learn to dictate the fight and not be drawn into mcdermotts or any others 'style' - use the jab, nice and rangey, and use the uppercut a bit more when desperate sluggers rush on (like he did in the last couple of rounds, which probably clinched it for him).
Well done Tyson - I and other Mancunians are proud of you mate.

I'm saying that is what probably what clinched it in the refs eyes.
I've got to be honest, I didn't think he'd got it, but I'm not naive enough to have my opinion swung by pundits who have an avid interest in supporting MALONEYS FIGHTERS ON SKY.
It's all about opinions and interpretations and luckily for Tyson, thats how the ref saw it and the scoring/style system he chose to favour on the night.
Now shouldn't we all be getting on with supporting our local lad?

So are you saying Tysons Dad John is irish? More importantly, does it matter and does anyone really care? This is the MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS? It's a melting pot and we have people from all over with different roots: But we are all Mancs? Why try to develop factions?

I know a few boxers personally myself, pro-am and like you I always look out for Manc boxers myself.
Can I just say about Tyson, he's a young lad and he's very talented (look at the ABA final last year) and he is a nice, polite, humble lad, when I have seen him around. I think he just plays up to the camera and other media to 'play the part' that he thinks the public want - he doesn't always get it right for everyones taste at the moment.
It's a big step from amateurs to pro: walking out to the ring with a camera, music and dancing girls in your face.
Try and give the lad a chance.
