GEORGIA Jones knows all about being one of the nation’s shining basketball lights.
Now she is continuing her impressive progress in America.
The daughter of Manchester Magic coach Jeff Jones – who turns 19 next month – is one of Great Britain’s top women players and the youngest to represent her country.
But she is also making waves in the States, being named Newcomer of the Year in the NCAA’s Summit League after joining Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma as a freshman.
The former Manchester Mystics guard and former Loreto student earned the honour after finishing the regular season with an average of 12.2 points per game, leading all the newcomers in the league, and posting the league’s second-best assist/turnover ratio at 1.6. She dished out 3.2 assists and collected 1.8 steals per game, both newcomer bests.
Jones ranks fifth in league games in steals, sixth in assists and 10th in scoring. Since the beginning of 2009, she ranked in the top 15 in the nation among freshmen in points scored and she has also made 67 three-point field goals, which is joint-third in season records at ORU.
The only downside for Jones was her team’s defeat to South Dakota State Jackrabbits, ranked 14th nationally, in the league’s final eight play-offs.
