JEFF Jones is happy with Manchester Magic’s efforts to defend their treble – but still wants more from his team.

The champions travel to Sheffield in EBL1 on Saturday with only one loss on their record as they reach the halfway point of the season.

That came away against their biggest rivals Reading – who Magic meet in the National Cup final next month – but the coach is upbeat going into his team’s last match before the Christmas break.

Pre-season fears that his squad is weaker than last term’s haven’t hit home, and Jones said: “I was a little uncertain before we started, but I’d look stupid to be complaining having only lost one game!

“I’m pretty happy with what we have done so far, but there is room for improvement and we can get more from the bench guys coming in.”

Magic are level-pegging with Reading at the top, though last year’s second-placed club have played a game less.

Beatable

“They are beatable,” added Jones. “I won’t be worried if we have to beat them by more than eight points (the margin by which the Rockets beat Magic last month) when they come to us.

“There are other teams out there that can beat them – probably not when they are at home, but on the road – and hopefully one can do us a favour.”

Jones takes a fully fit squad to Sheffield, who have won three and lost three in the league.

“They are a bit of an enigma,” he said. “They are very tough at home and they make me about as anxious as I get.

“I don’t want my guys switching off, so we have to be focused and ready to go.”

The Mystics travel to Northumbria in the Women’s Division One on Saturday.
