Amaechi was back on court to hold a basketball training session with local Special Olympics athletes at the Amaechi Basketball Centre in Whalley Range.
“It is always a humbling experience to coach such enthusiastic people," said Stockport-raised Amaechi, who played for Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz in the United States.
"I don’t really see this as me giving something back.
"There are some pursuits that you take part in that you get more than you could ever possibly give.
"Every time I’m around special athletes I’m aware they have special qualities that aren’t necessary to do with their ability, they’re just amazing characters.
"It was obvious to me from this training session that everything we want from our sportspeople they are.
"One of the great things about the basketball centre here is the impact it has on people when they walk through the door.
"It’s well deserved that these athletes should get to a venue like this and it’s nice that it has an impact.
"I hope the Special Olympics athletes who attended the training session picked up a few tips from me and can put them into practice in next year’s National Summer Games."
The training session was the first in a series of Special Olympics ambassador training sessions ahead of the GB National Summer Games, to be held in Leicester in July next year. It also coincided with European Basketball Week.
