Most house hunters want a detached property

A QUARTER of people looking for a new home want to live in a detached house, according to new research.

Bradford & Bingley Estate Agents said 24 per cent of people using its property website looked for a detached house, while 23 per cent wanted a semi-detached property and 22 people wanted a terrace home.

Bungalows were also popular with 12 per cent of house hunters searching for one, although just 2 per cent of people looking for a new property expressed interest in cottages.

First-time buyers were most likely to be looking for a flat, with just over half searching for a flat or apartment, although the group said this may be because flats tend to be cheaper than houses.

Terrace and semi-detached houses were the most popular type of property for people house hunting in the North East, each attracting 27 per cent of potential buyers.

Those in Yorkshire, the Midlands, East Anglia and the South West are most likely to want a detached home, while 49 per cent of Scots want to buy a flat.

Gary Verity, managing director of Bradford & Bingley Estate Agents, said: "It's not surprising that a detached house is the most popular type.

"They are a favourite with families as well as those looking for more space and privacy."
