A century-old wireworks, the scene of Warrington's longest and most bitter industrial 'siege', is set for a new lease of life - as a smart, 377-home urban-cottage style community.

Persimmon North-West plans to take over Greenings Brittania Works in Bewsey Road, where a 23-week strike over a pay claim in the '80's lost the company over z1m. and cost the 460 strikers z2,000 each.

When the dispute ended, it was claimed they had the most expensive suntans in Britain.

The 22-acre works site - once a major regional presence in wire weaving and metal perforating - is presently occupied by a cluster of small firms on short leases.

Developers have given re-location notice to the town's gymnastics club as plans are rolled out for a tree-lined estate adjoining Warrington Hospital.

Affordable

Persimmon's Leigh office says it is hoped to build 140 flats, 45 town houses and 192 houses, with an emphasis on 'affordable' homes.

Urban cottages and urban-style homes will be mixed with villa properties, apartments, Regency-style townhouses and apartments.

The developers have been asked to give details if their plans to a public meeting to allay fears of neighbours and businesses.

A wildlife habitat close to the Greenings site is also being investigated to see whether there is a need to protect animals and birds.
