I voted no, because there is nowhere controlled by drug gangs in manchester, im not saying theres not some areas that are rough, where people who take the drugs and go about mugging people etc, but these at not the people who sell them, trust me the police and goverment would not put up with it. And before you all jump on my case and say the police dont do anything, trust me iff your on the other side of the fence and you get to big for your boots, they will divert all there resorses and bring you down like a ton of bricks. The gangs as you would call them no that. The police are the biggest gang out there and very very patient, but trust me they 99.9% win. FACT
Large cities all over the world have areas that are not the safest, but it is up to the police and the people who live in the area to do something about it. Seeing drugs being sold and used, gangs mugging and intimidating and people not reporting it is what causes these areas to develop into "no-go zones". Don't give up on them- do something!
Yes, as with other major cities, ours has its issues and it is worse in some areas than others BUT I do not accept this 'no go' & 'drug gang controlled' areas as the article suggests.
Please name the areas if they do actually exsist then things can and will be done about them.
Times have moved on and sentences for those trying to control 'manors' have, thankfully become major.
I was brought up in Longsight and live in Vancouver..I spend 3 months in the UK and 3 months in Mexico every year.....I feel safer in Mexico....I like to travel on Mexicos rickety buses when I can......but the last altercation I saw last month was on the 192 bus in Longsight.......There are no pubs in Longsight because of people using them to deal drugs...
what a stupid poll question and what stupid people have voted yes. i would be very interested to hear from those who voted yes which areas are "controlled by drugs gangs" and have become no go areas.
These people who voted yes need to get out more and stop taking too seriously nonsense they read on the web.
I voted yes. I grew up in manchester and there are plenty of places I avoid. Especially Longsight and Moss side. Yes, they are rough areas and there are a lot of problems without gangs, but then there are gangs in these areas, and they do deal drugs, and if you say they don't, then you're ignorant. Sure, the Drug dreals may not be the ones causing the trouble, but it tends to be the gangs they are in. Most drug dealers are not part of gangs and these ones are the ones that cause less trouble. It's the ones in gangs who think they own the place and take over areas. It's silly really, how people can feel scared to go into an area, just due to a bunch of idiots walking with knives and such. Even if they don't do anything, it still feels a no go area just because of the atmosphere.
I think the media is going to help give control to gangs ect, if they make people believe that the gangs have control (which they don't) then, they might just get it. The Police will then have to step up, strip some of the citizens right's and criminalize these people.
Alternatively they can stop spreading the bull*&*t and start fixing the problems , makes me laugh that some idiot sat at the U.N. knows so much about my streets, considering they know so much, why haven't they arrested these people, named and shamed ? maybe because there is no proof....... or its just complete lies! =D have a nice day
To the people who voted yes, go and research or visit Mexico or the Brazilian favelas then I am sure you will re-evaluate your opinions hopefully.Must be a product of media and political scare mongering if you ask me....don't forget there are terrorists EVERYWHERE.
Sick of leftie do gooders that encourage people to be offended or find things offensive. Wrote…
I think the headline is misleading, if some areas are controlled by drug gangs is one issue and if there are no go areas for other reasons is another issue, but there certainly are no go areas in Greater Manchester.
It is absolutely ridiculous to compare the Brazilian favelas to parts of Manchester. The people who live in the favelas have built their on homes because they have nowhere else to live. They don't pay rent; rates, electricity bills or council tax. The main reason they live in that way is because of political corruption.
I've worked in Moss Side (which is possibly one of those 'no-go areas' for the past 4.5 years; and NEVER experienced a problem! the area is a great place with great people! For those who criticise certain areas; perhaps they should spend some time in those areas and get to know the people before making such scandalous remarks further reinforcing the media stereotypes on these areas!

If there are no-go areas then the police have turned a blind eye to all this criminal activities.

I also voted no.

There are rough areas, but no no-go ones. No comparison with places in the US or Mexico etc....
I voted no.

I think Manchester is out of control and I'm glad to have moved to surrey.
