Metrolink passengers are faced even more disruption tonight after another tram failed on the network.
Bosses said a failed tram at Prestwich this afternoon meant commuters were experiencing delays on the Bury and Altrincham lines.
It is understood the tram has been cleared from the line, but there are knock-on delays.
A spokesman said: “Metrolink sincerely apologises for any inconvenience this afternoon.”
A 12-minute service is operating on the line to Eccles and MediaCity, and on the South Manchester Line.
The breakdown is the latest in a series of delays faced by disgruntled passengers.
A tram heading out of Manchester broke down on Mosley Street at 10.25am yesterday, causing delays to other services stuck behind it.
Passengers also faced delays on Tuesday after the points failed at Cornbrook and then Trafford Bar.
Services were also disrupted last week when two trams broke down, one on Tuesday and the other on Wednesday.
Tram bosses have already issued an apology for this week’s disruption.
A spokeswoman for Transport for Greater Manchester, which owns the network, said: "We do understand how frustrating it's been for passengers as there have been a few problems over the last few days which have been un-related. We do always try and get things moving again as quickly as possible.”

We seem to have been here before! you know you might experience a delay on the metro these days when you see a bookseller on the platform!
If I relied on the metrolink to get me to work. I'd no longer be employed.
What a rubbish tram system we have, glad i am retired and don't have to rely on it for getting to work.
What on earth is the problem with these trams and the town centre lines and points, always failing.
British Rail used to be the laughing stock with "leaves on line" excuses but Metrolink have overtaken them big style of late.
Instead of rolling out the system i would suggest that they get what they have got working properly first.
Can't keep on saying sorry Metrolink....Free day!!!
Another one! Metrolink.. GET A GRIP!
again and again and again, they are in Stutus Qou mode, again and again and again
One wonders if it's the same tram that keeps breaking down, or whether it's each one of them taking their turn? Surely it's time to make this sorry outfit pay adequate compensation for the delays, after all they can tax the fare dodgers £20, it seems only fair that they give a similar amount in compensation.
It would be nice to know precisely what the problems are, is it a design fault, a lack of maintenance, the same recurring problem, or different issues altogether ? People become cynical when no detailed explanation is forthcoming.
Make the data available and tell us what specific steps are being taken to remedy the situation.
There should be nothing to hide, its a public transport service.
they should bring back trains instead of the trams ,they never broke down
!!!!!!!!!! ???????
All services should be immediately suspended pending a government enquiry. No transport system should have this level of failure rate.
Metrolink should provide bus transport instead and should not be allowed to operate until such time as they have proven their system to work.
Are we supposed to be surprised?
I've always been a keen Metrolink supporter, perhaps because I only ever use it out of peak hours when it's usually quite reliable. Though seeing this story on the homepage made me actually 'lol'. It's getting stupid!
FOR GOODNESS SAKE! Stop with this rediculous sensational clap trap. I was on the tram behind this which DID NOT fail at Prestwich but at Abrahma Moss. At Queen's Road the driver was advised to procede past a red light (SPAD) to Woodlands Road as a tram (the one in question) had failed at Abraham Moss. We waited 5 minutes and then set off to Crumpsall and Bowker, at Bowker the driver was then advised to procede (SPAD) to Heaton Park as the failed tram in front had begun to work again but then failed at Prestwich. We waited no more than 5 mins at Heaton Park and were then cleared to Bury as the failed tram had been 'rescued', coupled up to a working unit. All in all, 10 minutes were added to my journey to Whitefield. The tram was clear all the way to Bury which would have taken a further 5/7 minutes from Whitefield. Aftet that it took me 30 MINUTES from gaining the motorway to travel from Jct 17 to Jct 16 (1 MILE of motorway) on the M60 but that is not news worthy is it MEN. People really need to get a reality check. Within seconds of the driver, whoes job it is to drive - not know all the technical issues or be an instant real time directive - informing us that the tram would be a few minutes delay fellow passengers were hammering on the drivers door deamnding an exact time of arrival, texting and phoning up people to rearrange their ever so important time. 10 MINUTES delay for God's sake, it's not the end of the world!!!! And I paid £6.30 for my ticket. Still damn good value compared to driving.
From a person that normally drives everywhere.
As Victor Meldrew would say " I don't believe it!!"
Haha. All the posters on here should play a drinking game - every time a tram fails, down your drinks!!
Metrolink fails on a daily basis, it's embarrassing and needs a complete investigation of the system and prices to keep it in line with public transport throughout other countries in Europe
Give it up, the attacks on Metrolink are embarrassing. If bus and train delays were given the same coverage, there would be no room for actual news.
Surely it's time to scrap these over-priced white elephants, and hand back all the road space they've appropriated to vehicles that don't break down every five minutes! We could even use the rail sections to run, God forbid, proper TRAINS!
Is there a Tech. Bod out there who can explain why these break downs take place?
Is it out of date softwear? Is it poor maintenance?Do other tram systems have similar problems? Was the original system done on cheap materials?
Could the M.E.N. call for an investigation into what is a vital failing transport system?
Surely Something Wrong Somewhere!!!!
Second rate system for the so called SECOND CITY ?
The last week has been a nightmare - going to and from work, with broken trams, point and signal failures and sometimes no explanation at all. Before TfGM thinks about opening the Oldham and Ashton lines it needs to ensure the current system works properly. Makes me think that investing more heavily in bus systems would have been a better and cheaper alternative.
Those complaining on here really need to take a reality check. I visited my parents in Cornwall last month and public transport is virtually non-existent down there! Buses run once every hour if you are lucky and can take 45 minutes to travel a 12-mile route on single-carriageway roads. Train services aren't much better and there is always delays -an hour delay or a cancelled service is a regular occurence! I really don't think the tram service in the city is that bad if you are only held up by 10 minutes. What is 10 minutes for goodness sake or even 20 for that matter?! I use the trams on a regular basis as I won't pay the ridiculous parking fees in town and can honestly say I'm quite happy with the service.
