THOUSANDS of Metrolink passengers were riding trams for free again today after transport chiefs granted them a second fare holiday.
They were given two days of ticket-less travel as a ‘thank you’ for putting up with disruption during a £22m upgrade of the city’s track.
Passengers rode for free last Saturday as well as today – a move timed to coincide with the opening on Manchester’s Christmas markets last night.
A senior councillor, who called on Metrolink bosses to have the second free day, hailed the decision as a success.
Annual event
Coun Pat Karney, Manchester council’s city centre spokesman, said he would now be urging Metrolink to make the free travels days an annual event.
Metrolink’s city centre section closed in April and reopened on November 2.
Engineers replaced the track and overhauled stops at St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens.
Transport bosses have been encouraging people to make the most of the free services.
They say they will continue to consider initiatives that promote public transport.
All available staff were being deployed to stations to ensure staff to assist passengers.
Patience
Coun Keith Whitmore, the chairman of the Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority, said: “The two free days we are funding this month are our way of thanking passengers for their patience while we carried out major improvements to the city centre tracks.
“All the revenue raised from Metrolink ticket sales goes right back into operating, expanding or improving the system, so we have to be sure that decisions like this aren’t made at the expense of the network.
“There is also the cost to the Authority to bear in mind, as we are already committed to subsidising a wide range of socially essential bus services and to keeping concessionary fares as low as possible.
“However, we will continue to consider initiatives that promote public transport and support the Greater Manchester economy.”

Communication with customers has always been a problem - especially when there are problems - but let's hope the Management have got the message and things they are a-changing!

... they end up failing!!
For gods sake of the irony, in a mission to thank customers for their continued patience over severe incompetence in even running the most basic of services they still end up making a pigs ear of it!
Over half an hour I had wait tonight (6.30ish)for an Eccles tram from St. Peters square
Oh of course I had the pleasure of watching 6 Alty trams pass me by and not hearing just one single announcement explaining what was wrong this time!
The lengths they go to to actually peve loyal customers off, without evening trying, is staggering!!!

The ticket machines were switched off so you couldn't buy a ticket from them and metrolink staff were deployed at stations to inform passengers!

All the ticket machines were switched off and had posters advising about the free travel.
The trams have had posters on for days, the local radio stations have mentioned it numerous time, the Metrolink web site has it clearly mentioned.
It has been made very clear that season ticket holders can get a refund for the free days.
What more do you want?
No matter what good occurs in this area, somehow, some will still manage to find fault with the good.

The ticket machines were switched off on Saturday, although I saw no evidence of the posters or flyiers others seem to have seen, made my journey somewhat nerve racking, wondering if an inspector would arrive to issue a fine. Needn't have worried though, didn't see a even one member of staff on either journey (GMEX to Heaton Park).

A tram into Manchester didn't arrive til 6:27am. They are meant to be every 6 minutes.
In this time, 5 trams went to Altrincham.
They can't even get it right when it's free.
No doubt Purdy and the Fat Controller will be pictured in the M.E.N. tomorrow telling us how the free travel days were a great success.
Yawn.
