NEWS broadcasters have had their reputations hit by the recent scandals involving competition phone-ins, according to leading industry figures.

Speaking as the Society of Editors consider the issue of trust Adam Boulton, political editor of Sky news said that recent events, although not in news broadcasting, had made the issue a very relevant theme for discussion.

THE guardian of Britain's freedom of information laws has welcomed plans to extend them.

Information Commissioner Richard Thomas said the Freedom of Information Act was 'part of the constitutional settlement of 21st century Britain'.

BRITAIN has 'one of the best news media in the world', a leading civil rights campaigner has claimed.

Shami Chakrabarti, director of pressure group Liberty, said while there might be 'a crisis of trust in politics' there was no such crisis of trust in the media.

JOURNALISTS from across the country have lobbied the Society of Editors conference in Manchester.

Around 100 members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) marched from the Manchester Evening News offices along Deansgate to the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, in Peter Street, at 12.30pm.

Rise in number of terrorists

THE head of the security service MI5 has revealed a dramatic rise in the number of terrorists believed to be operating in Britain to about 4,000.

Speaking in central Manchester, Jonathan Evans, said the service was aware of more than 2,000 specific people who now pose a direct threat to national security - and he said there may be as many who have not been identified.

A year ago, Mr Evans' predecessor, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, estimated the number of people involved in terrorism at about 1,600.

Future vibrant for newspapers

NEWSPAPERS have a "vibrant and relevant" future in the age of the internet, a top industry figurehead has claimed.

Gavin O'Reilly, president of the World Association of Newspapers, said "quality, distinctive journalism" would "stand the test of time" and become more valuable, not less, in a new media age.
