He joined the Manchester Evening News in 1975 as a general news reporter and in 1984 was appointed crime correspondent covering the whole of the Stalker Affair and the re-opening of the Moors Murders excavation.

STEVE Lowe did not take the orthodox route into journalism. He was a county councillor and painter and decorator, whose skills were spotted by former owner of LSNMedia, Frank Branston.

Lowe became a part-time journalist and columnist for Bedfordshire on Sunday in 1996, full-time in 1998, news editor in 1999, editor in 2000 and group editor in 2003.
