The officers, some of them armed, will create a secure zone around the Manchester Central convention centre as part of £5.6m Operation Protector.
But Greater Manchester Police say there will be no changes to 'day to day' policing across the region.
The conference, with 15,000 delegates, takes place from September 20 to 24.
Those entering the secure area, which covers the conference centre and the Midland and Radisson hotels, will face airport-style bag checks and detector barriers.
Vehicles heading to the conference village, also known as the '[island site', will be searched before they arrive and cars heading into the city will face checks using special, hi-tech cameras. Officers have spent the past few weeks searching the venues - including all underground drains and tunnels.
High-visibility patrols will also be placed in 'hotspot' areas to 'reassure' delegates who may wish to go outside the secure zone.
But police say there is no need for people to be alarmed as the terror threat is deemed to be 'low'. Drivers face diversions, but trams and buses should run as normal.

£5.6m to protect Labour?
Posters all over the City?
I think I'd rather have Rangers back
Of course not Chris. There are also fairies at the bottom of my garden and the moon is made of cream cheese.
It's nice to hear how labour MP's will be looked after so well in Manchester.
Just before they get voted out - for good!
What MEN should have said is that Manchester streets will be as safe as before, which means that there will be less police sat at the side of the motorway or behind desks

thats a laugh my buses were at least 1/2 an hour late last time this lot were in town
Even though we do not have enough police on the streets on any normal day?
Roll out your house elves ;)
Cobblers....Streets will be safe, hows that work they are not safe now just wait for the headlines after the conference.. or at least the pages after
The timing and amount of closures is out of proportion to the event. Why have roads been cordoned or shut so far in advance? With disruption about to go into overdrive from tomorrow, getting to work in the area, or passing through it, will be a prohibitive nightmare. Thank you Labour, another fine mess you've got us into!
I heard from a reliable source that more magistrates will be on duty during the Labour Conference. I hope that free speech isn't to be stifled AGAIN.
