George Street horror almost over

IT WAS the only place to advertise a disaster movie this week - the scene of BT's own nightmare on George Street.

A poster heralding the low-budget Brit-horror Shaun of the Dead - "The lines are dead and so is everyone else" - appeared on a phone box in the Manchester city centre road where an underground cable fire knocked out 130,000 phone lines.

Meanwhile, businesses yet to lodge a complaint with BT about this week's phone chaos could still be cut off on Monday.

The phone giant said that only about 150 domestic lines were still not working and the vast majority of the 130,000 lines affected by the blaze, which broke out last Monday, were due to be back in service this morning.

But BT admitted there might still be problems for companies which had not reported faults and urged them to do so as quickly as possible.

A spokeswoman said: "There are still issues for some business customers with private circuits. The vast majority will be back this morning. We expect most lines which we are aware of will be back on over the weekend.

"We are keeping an eye out because there might be some businesses which have not reported faults and might be on cables that have not yet been repaired."

Greater Manchester's public transport information line on 0161 228 7811, just one service cut off by the fire, was expected to be back in operation this morning.

For the latest update on progress call BT free on 151 from a fixed-line phone or 0800 800 151 from a mobile.
