They used telephone directories strapped to their legs for padding and walking sticks borrowed from grandparents to play with.
But this summer, Pendlebury Coyotes in-line roller hockey team has the chance to represent England in the world championships in Cincinnatti - if they can raise £1,200 each for air fares and expenses.
General manager Tony Camilleri said: "When our team first started, they played in a car park at Swinton Shopping Centre. Some didn't even have the proper hockey footwear and the net minders would wear motorbike crash helmets."
It has come a long way in seven years as the sport exploded in popularity with Salford and Manchester leading the way.
Salford council has helped nurture the sport by helping buy kit and subsidising coaching sessions.Eccles MP Ian Stewart and Salford Police boss Chief Supt Brian Wroe are backing the team because it has helped divert youngsters from back streets to stadiums.
The Coyotes' invitation to the USA was secured by several amazing performances in the European Championships held at Derby. They lost 4-3 to a "Best of Europe" team, which included five professionals.
Tony said: "There is so much excellent talent in Salford and Manchester. The and the game is now being introduced into schools.
"The National League is a self-funding and voluntary organisation that makes very little profit. We have put the kids in a safe environment and thankfully they no longer have to play in car parks.
"Playing in America is a wonderful opportunity for the team but we need to raise sponsorship."

At the same event in Derby, Glossopdale Devils Under-10 squad also qualified for NARCh (North American Roller Hockey Championships) in the MITE Silver Division.
The Team play in the North West Region for B.I.P.H.A. (British Inline Puck Hockey Association) at Under-10 level. This is the latest in a long line of achievements for the Club at this age-level and is an endorsement of the Development Programme in place at the Club which encourages youngsters to take up this sport.
