Scuffles as protesters target hunt

SCUFFLES broke out between hunt supporters and blood-sport protesters as the Holcombe Hunt met at Rivington.

Dozens of campaigners from the League Against Cruel Sports and other groups shouted at riders yesterday as they set off with the hounds and police intervened in several minor confrontations.

But despite the stand-off, the riders did not go hunting because of treacherous weather conditions on the moors.

Police said no-one was arrested. A woman suffering from angina was taken to hospital.

Protesters said they were confident that hunting would soon be banned.

Jeanne Young of the North West League Against Cruel Sports said: "Hunting has no place in a civilised society. Yesterday will be one of the last times we will have to witness these scenes of cruelty in the countryside."

Joint Master of the Hunt, George Dickinson, said: "The Holcombe Hunt has been here since the 14th century. It's the oldest in the country. It's a tradition that should remain."

Slavery, disease and being hung drawn and quartered were also the norm. Do we allow these things to be preserved TOO......

What do the Hunt expect - 76% of the public naturally and rightly object to the brutal harassment of wild animals as a recreation. This Hunt subjects endangered hares to sustained persecution in wet cold conditions in which they are bound to die of stress and chill if they don't get killed, and have killed at least 3 since September - one trapped against a fence and stiff with fright! It IS a free country - for everyone and for its wild animals.

Right, ok, "Hunting is traditional", so therefore, it should remain. Well, may I remind you that burning people at the stake was also once tradition. Would you tolerate that now?! Hunting is totally barbaric, and completely unacceptable in modern day society. Nature controlls its own numbers. Wake up, welcome to the 21st Century! Hunting will be banned. Accept that, move on, and may I suggest that you find a proper job that doesn't involve cruelty!!

I do wish that these animal rights people would take up the cause of peoples rights (old age, hospital beds, poverty, law and order, and many more issues) as much as they prattled on about animal rights, I don't support blood sports but I do think there are more important things in our world than fox hunting!!!!!!

Leave the country for the country people to manage!
