REDS star Ryan Giggs showed he is green at heart by presenting the prestige Green Globe to five north west attractions - the first in the world to win the international award. The Pumphouse People's History Museum in Bridge Street, Manchester; Quarry Bank Mill, in Cheshire; the East Lancashire Railway; Stockport's Bramall Hall; and the G-Mex in Manchester, all received certificates from the United star after satisfying strict guidelines on sustainable and environmental tourism.Catherine Rew, acting director of the Pumphouse said: "We are the only city centre museum to have gone for Green Globe and we are very pleased to have got it."Green Globe chairman Geoff Lipman said Manchester is well ahead of the game with sustainable tourism. "Manchester is one of the leading players," said former Manchester student Mr Lipman, brother of actress Maureen. "These are the first visitor attraction certificates in the world to be awarded."Energy efficient lighting, water conservation projects, increasing visitor awareness of the environment and work with local communities were some of the ways the attractions qualified for the award's standards, drawn up after the Rio Earth Summit of 1992.The presentation event at the Marriott Worsley Hotel was organised by Marketing Manchester which was behind the Green Globe project in the area.
