SUNSHINE rhythms lifted the winter gloom at a high school music event.
The Caribbean music echoed through Leigh's Westleigh high school to mark its launch as Wigan council's centre for steel pan bands.
These are available for after-school and evening clubs for primary children, high school students and adults to join, with three different bands to allow anyone to develop their skills.
The launch saw some of Westleigh's pupils, with local primary school children, taking part in a workshop and seeing a performance by Swinton high school's own steel band.
Stuart Barton, Westleigh's head of music, said: ''This is a real coup for the school and allows a range of musical opportunities for children and adults.
''The steel pans are easy to learn, yet create a lovely sound. When they are played you can close your eyes and imagine yourself on a desert island.''
Westleigh head John Pout said: ''The equipment and tutoring are not just for Westleigh's pupils. They are available for children, students and adults throughout the community.
''After our success in obtaining the Arts Mark award, we are delighted to improve the quality of our music education still further.
''These steel pan bands are a marvellous addition to what we can offer.''
• Anyone interested in learning to play the steel pans can contact Mr Barton (for primary and high school pupils) or Pat Morgan (for adults) at Westleigh on 01942 202580.
