A HOSPITAL doctor jailed for lying at an inquest was exposed by his colleagues, it was revealed.

Consultant anaesthetist Yashvant Pole was jailed for four months after it was discovered he had lied about his treatment of a terminally ill woman.

Now, it has been revealed fellow medics reported the deceit to coroner John Pollard - who then informed police.

Hospital chiefs today said concerns were raised by Pole's colleagues about evidence he gave at the inquest into the death of Maureen Sutherns.

He failed to apply pressure to her throat to prevent vomiting during surgery. She later died after inhaling vomit.

Manchester Crown Court was told that at an inquest in May 1999 Pole insisted on oath that he had followed the procedure. But other staff at Trafford General Hospital said he had not.

David Cain, chief executive of Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust, said: ''We view what happened as being of the utmost seriousness.''
