Manchester United will become the first high-profile sporting victims of the fuel crisis tonight, reports the Star. The full extent of the crisis will hit home at the Champions League game against Anderlecht where for the first time in years a large number of seats are likely to be empty. Even team boss Sir Alex Ferguson will have to get a lift to the game because he used the last of his fuel driving to watch his son Darren play for Wrexham. If safety becomes an issue for any league game, it will be called off. The on-going crisis could lead to a sports blackout at the weekend.

United defender Jaap Stam is desperate to be fit for tonight's Anderlecht game, says the Mirror. Stam faces a late fitness test on an Achilles injury and has recently had intensive treatment. If Stam fails to start, boss Alex Ferguson will be forced to witch Gary Neville into the middle to partner Ronny Johnsen or draft in Ronnie Wallwork.

Sir Alex Ferguson told his players to turn themselves into legends, says the Star. The message to his United stars was to win it for themselves not for him. Fergie has won more trophies than any manager in his 14 year career. The United manager said that not winning the trophy would not make him particularly unhappy but there is still a desire to win.

Luke Chadwick, the winger on loan to Royal Antwerp passed on his first-hand knowledge of United's opponents Anderlecht, reports the Times. Antwerp lost 3-0 to the Belgian champions on Saturday but is confident United will not suffer such a fate. "Anderlecht may be the strongest side in Belgium but they are slow at the back. Chadwick does not fancy Anderlecht's chances away from home.
