LONDON was today threatened with gridlock by a convoy of about 100 lorries.

Three groups of lorries were reported travelling slowly along the A40 in Shepherd's Bush, west London. It was believed the drivers were heading towards Parliament Square.

Elsewhere, a convoy was travelling on the northbound A1 in North Yorkshire. Hauliers were also threatening to target the M1 and M62 in West Yorkshire this afternoon for the third day.

• There are fears that banks could soon be running out of cash. The banking union UNIFI said it had reports from workers at a handful of branches in the Midlands that stocks were low.

• Manchester United's Euro clash at Old Trafford tonight is going ahead as planned. The club has a contingency plan to ensure back-up security staff are available.

• Manchester City are hoping to make an announcement tomorrow on whether the sell-out Premiership game at Maine Road against Middlesbrough is on.

Belle Vue's speedway's home meeting against Ipswich on Friday is in jeopardy.

An announcement is expected later about whether tomorrow's horse racing programme will go ahead. Pontefract is the most likely to be abandoned because the ambulance service have advised they cannot provide 999 vehicles to cover the meeting.

The big St Helens-Wigan rugby league clash on Friday will go ahead but gloomy officials are already accepting the gate will be down.
