THE Manchester Evening News soccer challenge has been given the Royal seal of approval.
Prince Charles and Prince Andrew have sent messages of support for our football legends fundraiser for the bereaved families of New York firefighters who died after the World Trade Centre terror attacks.
The prestigious list of dignitaries and celebrities backing Friday night's event is growing - with New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Sir Alex Ferguson, Kevin Keegan, England captain David Beckham and opera singer Russell Watson all voicing their approval.
The Duke of York, who has been to New York since the attacks, said: ''The tragic events in the USA on September 11 shocked everyone. The loss of life was truly appalling.
''It is right that the world community comes together to assist the dependants of those brave New York firefighters who lost their lives that day.
Solidarity
''In this respect I much admire the initiative taken by the Manchester Evening News in organising this special footballing occasion.
''This will enable soccer stars and supporters to show their compassion and solidarity with those directly affected by the terrible events.''
The Prince of Wales' private secretary Stephen Lamport also relayed a message of support for the soccer challenge.
He said: ''The Prince of Wales has asked me to pass on to you and to all those taking part in the football challenge his very best wishes for the success of the event and of its contribution to the important cause which it has been organised to support.''
The challenge will feature a match between legends of Manchester United and City, songs from chart-topping tenor Russell Watson, and another soccer match between the stars of Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Casualty, Brookside and Hollyoaks.
Tickets for the event at the Manchester Evening News Arena are priced just £3 and are available from the hotline on 0161 930 8000.
