BRITAIN's biggest single fundraising event in aid of the firefighters of New York is to take place in Manchester - courtesy of the M.E.N.
The terrorist attacks on New York and Washington 11 and their tragic consequences have touched the hearts of everyone in this country, and we are anxious to do all we can to boost the appeal set up for the dependants of those who died.
Global companies, showbiz celebrities and the football community have all pledged support for our special charity challenge match between Manchester City and United legends at the M.E.N. Arena on Friday, October 19 (7pm).
Generosity
Sir Alex Ferguson and Kevin Keegan have already generously agreed to manage the two teams in the hour-long contest and their big-hearted response has been matched by hundreds of others.
The Arena, which is under the umbrella of the SMG Group, has provided the venue free of charge and NCP will slash official car parking charges on the night with all proceeds donated back to the fund.
Hundreds of firefighters from the Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Cheshire Brigades will be in attendance as their own drive to swell the fund gathers pace.
And the legends match will only be the showpiece of a night's entertainment aimed at all the family.
Celebrities
Century Radio will broadcast their Legends Phone-in live from the Arena starting at 6pm.
They will be followed by dancing girls and a celebrity soccer match between rival television soap stars with the likes of Coronation Street's Michael le Vell expected to turn out.
''I didn't hesitate when asked to get involved because it is for such a good cause,'' said the actor, who plays Weatherfield mechanic Kevin Webster.
''Anyone who knows what those firefighters in New York did to save others, in many cases losing their lives as a result, can't but be in awe of their heroism.''
America's ambassador to Britain is expected to attend the event along with high-ranking ministers from our own Government. It is hoped that a New York firefighter will attend in person to collect the cheque.
Admission to the event will be £3 for adults and £2 for concessions. A family ticket (two adults and two concessions) will cost £8.
Tickets will automatically enter their purchasers into a raffle with magnificent prizes on offer.
It is hoped that both City and United will provide VIP day-out prizes for the lucky youngsters drawn out of the hat by Sir Alex Ferguson and Kevin Keegan.
There will also be super family holiday prizes to be won.
Heywood-based JD Sports has agreed to provide Union and US flags, given out by firemen on the night.
Tickets are available on 0161 930 8000 - box office opening from 10am Thursday, October 4 and from the M.E.N Arena box office.
