Amanda just Wild about exam success

WHEN Amanda Wild collected her GCSE results, she wanted to share the news with her family - and the local children's hospital.

During the past 12 months, Amanda has had 13 operations on her brain, to relieve pressure caused by fluid.

The 16-year-old from Shaw, who suffers from hydrocephalus, has spent a large part of the year as a patient at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, in Pendlebury.

So she was thrilled to discover she had notched up four A* grades, two As and two Bs.

"I wasn't expecting to do so well because I have had to have eight or nine months off school," said Amanda, who attends Crompton House School, Shaw, Oldham. She is now planning to study for A-levels and hopes to become a doctor.

• Darren Cunningham, from New Moston, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour just days before his exams began, has been awarded five As and two Bs.
