Scholarships for high achievers

INDEPENDENT Manchester High School for Girls has three sixth-form bursaries available for high-achieving pupils who want to study hard on A-level courses.

The bursaries, awarded through the Ogden Trust, take care of the £5,000-a-year fees for the top-performing school.

And head Christine Lee-Jones is keen for students to take advantage of the scholarships - also part-funded by local businesses and agreed at the last minute.

She said: ‘‘We are delighted the Ogden Trust has offered bursaries and scholarship funding to Manchester High and several companies have so readily shown their willingness to share the trust’s aims.

‘‘Since its foundation, Manchester High has had a commitment to providing education to girls of the highest academic ability, regardless of background. The phased-out withdrawal of the assisted places scheme has made this more difficult.

‘‘The trust’s involvement with us has made a very positive contribution towards our objective of continuing such support.

‘‘We are very grateful to British Midland, Associated Nursing Services and a third company for also becoming involved. They have a shared aim in wanting to give opportunities to girls who couldn’t otherwise have benefited from what a school such as Manchester High has to offer.’’

Bosses at Manchester High are appealing for applications for the means-tested scholarships from high-achieving girls now attending state-sector schools.
