'Moors' mum spurns convict Bronson

THE mother of Moors Murders victim Keith Bennett has turned her back on a sensational offer by prison hard-man Charles Bronson to help find her son.

Jailed robber Bronson, once called Britain's most dangerous prisoner, offered to help fund a search to find Keith, who was 12 when Ian Brady and Myra Hindley abducted and killed him in 1964.

Keith is the only one of Brady and Hindley's victims not found, despite repeated searches of Saddleworth Moor.

Keith's mother Winnie Johnson was grateful when Bronson made the offer last autumn. But after almost a year of virtually no progress, she has said she wants nothing more to do with Bronson's campaign.

It was started with the intention of raising £1m. But its bank statement shows it only has £1,600.

Disillusioned

Mrs Johnson has become disillusioned about in-fighting among Bronson's advisers. They set up the registered charity Bronson's Children to receive funds and oversee the search.

Uncertainty about the way money is being raised also persuaded Mrs Johnson to pull out.

''Some of the money that I was told had been raised does not seem to have gone into the fund,'' she said. '

'I've been invited to fundraising events and been treated very well. But nobody is giving me a clear answer about what has been raised and who has got it.

''I have now decided that I don't want anything to do with it. All I want to do is find Keith.''
