Pupils show Europe how to be top of class

PUPILS in Tameside are showing how their European counterparts can reach the top of the class.

Education experts from 12 EU countries are visiting the area to see how council advisors have worked with teachers and children to improve marks.

The British Council picked Tameside to host the visit in recognition of successful work in raising standards.

Tameside's Education Officer, Ian Smith, said: ''We are really pleased to have been selected to host this visit. Normally local education authorities have to bid to host visits like this, but we were selected straight away because, we think, of the quality of our work.

''The trend is to cut back on educational advisory teams, but we are expanding ours.

''The advisors are there to help schools experiencing difficulties and to identify good practice in successful schools and share it with others.''

Mr Smith added the visit was already proving to be a success.

''From the feedback we have had from our visitors so far,'' he said, ''it is clear our system is well advanced in this respect and they feel they have something positive to learn here.

''However, the visit will be mutually beneficial - we will learn from experiences on both sides.''
