Ballet star helps pupils step to success

DANCER Wayne Sleep gave pupils a few tips on how to put their best foot forward for personal success.

The ballet star held a workshop at Tameside's Out of Hours Learning Conference to show how children can develop interests and skills outside the normal school day.

He gave dancing tuition to youngsters from Canon Burrows Primary School, Ashton, Ridge Hill Primary, Stalybridge, and Stamford High, Ashton to prove how education has wider boundaries than the classroom.

The workshop was also observed by teaching representatives who were seeking inspiration for out of hours schemes at schools.

Wayne said: ''I've come to a time in my career when I look back at how lucky I was to get my scholarship at the Royal Ballet School. I was not a high academic achiever but fortunately, despite growing up in the industrial north east where it was unheard of for a boy to take up ballet, I was given an opportunity to develop my talent.

''Now I want to give other young people a taste of the arts just to show them what they can achieve outside the classroom.

''I hope the pupils will come away from the session with new ideas of trying something new be it in the arts or another field. It may not lead to a glittering career but at the very least this kind of activity helps a child socially, giving confidence and the ability to hold their own.''
