Why is it that when we have problems like this on our railways people keep saying "they will have to learn?" WHY? How many people have to be injured or die, before something is done to stop these people from keep making mistakes???

A tragic event in Cumbria, but I agree with RB the train withstood the crash magnificently and did not break up.And a big rap on the back to the emergency services and local people who all rallied round to help and care for the passengers.Thats the spirit that still makes our nation great and somthing that terrorists or anybody else will never prevail over.

ACE

it is the real way to learn is from our mistakes, but, whatever happen, one person dies and another almost gave up his life to save as many passengers as possible.

Deep regret to the lady who dies and sympathy to her family, and congratulations to the driver of the train.

There not much that can be said...

It is indeed a great tragedy that one person died and my sympathies are with her family. However, thousands of people die in road accidents every year, including my brother, and yet nothing is said about learning from mistakes. It's about time we did something about the carnage on our roads before berating rail companies over their safety record.

I have a lot of respect and admiration for Richard Branson who left a family holiday to visit the scene and he looked badly affected by it. If it was not his train involved, I am sure many more people would have died. It is tragic that one person did die but that train saved the lives of many others. How many MD's do we see from other companies at the scene quickly whenever these awful crashes happen ?

I would like to say that everyone called Richard Branson when he decided to buy these trains, but his investment paid off, its very sad that someone lost their life, but many more could have done if these trains were scrapped for cheaper less safe trains, Richard Branson also showed that he cared, because he was straight their to apologize to the people involved, not many bosses would have shown as much sympathy, and he should be congratulated for his response to the accident. Safe trains and a top rail company. Let…lt;sup>TMs hope he does the same with Virgin Media.

the biggest respect for Sir Richard Branson. i've always admired him, for his down to earth attitude when it comes to business. that's one of the reasons why his Virgin brand has become so successful. where most companies would have gone to save money, he spent the extra shilling to have passenger safety and comfort in mind. and it has paid off. i think that Virgin trains should operate all intercity train services, using these pendolino trains. i'd trust my life on Virgin trains. Sir Richard, we salute you, a true businessman

I think you'll find that one of the major banks, through it's rolling stock company financed the trains, backed with a hefty subsidy of government cash. I'm delighted that Branson has backed the driver the way he has, but sadly once the emergency brake is applied, there are no controls to wrestle with.
