The rise of Pat Phoenix in pictures

SHE won the hearts of the nation as Coronation Street's sexy Elsie Tanner but as these photos show, Pat Phoenix was a star long before she took up residence in Weatherfield.

The pictures of the Corrie man-eater have never been seen in public before. Now they will see the light of day for the first time as they go up for auction.

The collection of snaps is thought to have been given to a friend by the star.

It includes autographed pictures of Pat and other stars. One shot from 1955 shows her looking like Marilyn Monroe in an early stage role.

The sale on February 7 is being handled by Sandbach-based auctioneers Andrew Hilditch and Son. Auctioneer Tom Andrew said: "It's a unique lot dealing with a legendary soap opera figure. It's been valued at é200 to é400 but may go for far more."

Turbulent

Pat played redhead Elsie for more than 20 years and in her prime was considered one of the sexiest women on TV.

Her on-screen antics were mirrored by her own turbulent love life which saw her marrying Corrie co-star Alan Browning, who played Alan Howard, and later on Tony Booth, father of Tony Blair's wife, Cherie. The actress died of cancer in 1986 aged 62.

Pat was a star, larger than life and well liked, it was a shame that she was such a troubled soul but we all have our crosses to bear.

Met Pat a few times. She was intense but basically very goodhearted and a staunch Lancastrian.
