Gay Games man honoured

TREVOR Burchick - the man behind the first-ever `gay Olympics' in Manchester - has been awarded an MBE.

The 45-year-old development consultant, from Salford Quays, scooped the honour for services to the community in Greater Manchester.

Last year, he launched the first-ever Pride Games for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-sexual sportspeople - attracting 700 competitors from around the world.

The event was praised for bringing together huge numbers of people as volunteers and helping individual clubs to get more LGBT people actively involved in sport and the community.

Trevor, who said he was `stunned' at the award, said: "It's even more exciting now the cat is out of the bag and people know about it.

"It is finally sinking in and now I am thinking of the exciting opportunities it might bring.

"We have got Pride Games in 2007, which will be much more inclusive of other groups, with many more volunteers involved.

"Hopefully, this award will help us build our profile."

Trevor also runs the Northern Wave Swimming Club in Salford - a not-for-profit voluntary organisation for the lesbian and gay community across the region. It gives people who prefer to avoid the `gay scene' another way to socialise. Earlier this year, Trevor finished third in the Pride of Manchester Awards.

This is ridiculous!!!! I've got nothing against gays, but why do they have to have their own Olympic Games? To integrate and be totally accepted into society why do gays single themselves out like this. Then they will complain when they do get singled out. Come on wake up and smell the roses. You're not doing yourselves any favours!!!!

Why? isn't this and all the other awards just proving to be worthless when this cack government won't even give Stephen Oake the award he rightly deserves. I only hope that anyone with any Conscience will decline the awards systemuntil justice is done. or is this just pandering to the so called pink vote that this left wing government pander to!!!!!!

Congratulations, great to see your devotion to the gay and lesbian community honoured. This comes in the same week the MEN reports our schools will be having a gay week to combat homphobia and let us hope The Leaders continue to recognise the need to provide equality for all in sports, arts, hearitage and culture events. If the London Olympics 2012 committee shares the public will, they should ring you and invite you to be a voice in how they engage all. Well done and thanks for the good and great work. Manchester loves you. The best is yet to come. Enjoy every minute our MBE friend.

maybe the award might be justified if it was for integregation, but an award for singling out one section of society as special is divisive.

congratulations trevor! so good to see someone be rewarded for raising so much money from public funds for so many brilliant causes. trevor is truly an inspiration to the young people of manchester and salford showing them that it is possible to have a good lifestyle from taxpayers money; they too could drive a jaguar, have lots of trips abroad to gay events and not have a steady job!
fantastic! well done trevor may you receive lots more funding for your brilliant work!

Great News and thank you for giving me the courage to take part. Yes, I am straight but enjoyed meeting all the happy folk at the gaysports and I am now much better at my work because I understand why we all need to help build stronger communities and see the end to homophobia and sex-hate issues. I think this big gong is about much more than just sports it is about the respect, courage, inclusion, support and growth. I have seen the Trevor World as something to be copied by all communties, because it makes taking part worth while and I am glad he has got a deserved gong. THANKS.

This report is not the full picture about Trevor MBE because he is also a volunteer at other events and in other groups and is centre stage engaged in a national impact community project for which he is no doubt being recognised with the honour.
Well done Trevor, your leadership, style and care deserves this honour.
