Footie players 'Prima donnas' says Queen

FOOTBALL is a wonderful game but footballers can be such prima donnas, according to the Queen.

The monarch chatted to the FA's Premier League chairman Sir David Richards about the sport as he was knighted at Buckingham Palace.

Sir David revealed: "She said to me `Football's a difficult business and aren't they prima donnas?'. I said `Yes Ma'am, some of them are.'

"She said `But it's a wonderful game'. She obviously watches the television. I think she meant when they fall on the floor and that they're good actors."

Sir David, one of football's most powerful men, said he was delighted with his accolade.

"It's beyond belief. It's just such a wonderful thing. As much as it's for football, it's what we've done for children in football that means more to me."

Sir David, 63, is chairman of the Football Foundation, which helps to improve the state of facilities at grass-roots level, and also works with the NSPCC's sports division.

IS the Queen right? Have your say.

I used to work at MUFC and, over 20 years ago, this is exactly what Jimmy Murphy (Sir Matt Busby's right-hand man) used to call them.

Sad to know that some things don't change.

They are just a bunch of overpaid, pampered, spoilt unproductive posers. Plus they are worshipped by millions of mindless people who for some bizzare reason feel the need to keep them perched high on a pedestal.

And the Monarchy is pretty much the same too.....

Somone has actually wasted time and space reporting this. I'm lost for words for a change.

I am not sure why an unelected individual like the Queen, should be listened to anyway...I never voted for her,and neither did any of my mates, family, cat or indeed anyone ever. T McQueen has it right. Its just one overpampered out of touch person going on about others.Though not all players are overpaid,Some work very hard, though of course it's impossible to justify the wages, when nurses, cleaners, and other vital services are paid so little.lower league players don't earn a great deal, and at least all soccer players have had to make there own good fortune, unlike the ridiculously overpaid, out of date royals.Plus as far as I know even that ex-footballer and current "brand"Beckham, manages to put his own toothpaste on his own toothbrush.

Upon reading my earlier letter I thought it came across as a little unfair on some footballers, though not all. Some are overpampered, and squeeze the fans for ill deserved massive wages.Though I do see that its a short career for a footballer,so often their thinking is to set themselves up for life time security..fair enough. Its the arrogance of some players that is gauling. Wage differentials generally have gone crazy in the post-Thatcher world, and often people will take what they can get..Its a social issue rather than just a soccer one.Much as this can in some cases create an out of touch mentality amongst some players, there are also clubs like Man City, and many of their players who do a lot for the community.
