A STOWAWAY cat endured a 17-day, 2,000-mile journey from its Israeli home - to Lancashire.
Ziggy was found in a warehouse after his trip, which began when he crept into a road container in the Israeli port of Haifa.
Staff at RSW Ltd, in Whitworth, Rossendale, were astonished when the cat - named after the David Bowie character Ziggy Stardust as he has a green eye and a blue eye - leapt out and jumped onto a roof.
Animal health and welfare officers were called in and quickly caught him.
Now they have launched a kitty to pay for quarantine costs and to send him home.
Starving
Officer Colin Barton said: "The cat was starving after the journey and was tempted into a trap with some tuna. He has probably used some of his nine lives."
He said Ziggy had been sealed in the container on October 31.
Now the RSPCA has launched an international SOS to trace the cat's Israeli owners.
Animal collection officer James Ratcliffe said: "It's amazing he survived. When I was called, the cat was licking puddles of water. He had been without food for some time, but he didn't look too bad, considering."

Thats such an amazing story... i had a cat that went missing about 6 months ago and it sure isnt like her to go away... she was my best friend i loved her so much and i just hope that one day she strolls bk home.
I once heard cats were brought to Israel during the British Mandate in Palestine, to get rid of the rats.
Maybe it wanted to see its ancestors homeland.
Why send him home? Surely he can be put up for adoption in England once his quarantine period is over?
The least Ziggy deserves is a first-class ticket when he goes home!
What an amazing story! Imagine the stories Ziggy could tell - if he could talk that is! :)
