The 27-year-old got into a car with a man in Port Street in Manchester centre, but as soon as he was inside, the driver locked his victim in and told him he had a knife.
The driver forced the man to strip before raping him.
He then drove to a second location where he raped him again and demanded money. The victim eventually escaped in Lord Sheldon Way, Ashton under Lyne.
Dc Pete Slater said: "This was an horrific attack. The victim is devastated and we want to make sure the man responsible is caught.
"I would also ask members of the gay community to be vigilant as this man may try to do this again."
The man picked his victim up at about 4.30am on Monday, November 6.
He was driving a dark-coloured car and is described as 5ft 8in, about 30 with short black hair, a chubby face and muscular arms.
He has a tattoo on his right arm with writing on the inside between his wrist and elbow.
He was wearing a stripy top and brown trousers. Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 9255. Tweet

Surely, the same advice should be the same for men as it is to women ? DON'T get in a car with a stranger. Nobody deserves to be attacked and raped but you can minimise your risk by not going off with people you don't know.
what a horrible thing to happen to anyone i hope they catch who did it, i don't want to sound awful but a lot of gay men stand around the edges of canal street looking for casual sex so its hardly a big suprise that this has happened and it will happen again unless people are aware that its not safe to cruise the streets for a one night stand
SORRY TO HEAR WHAT HAS HAPPENED. HOPE THIS MAN IS CAUGHT AND BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.
It's unfortunate & scary that some men have to criminalise homosexuality because they cannot accept who they are.
I hope they catch the guy who did this.
Why people are hanging around at 4.30am on the streets is beyond me.
