as a police officer I have witnessed on several occassions recently a number of taxi drivers ignoring signals for the trams. they are there for the safety of the fare paying passengers on the trams and other members of the public, yet taxi drivers deliberately ignore the signals.

Maybe he sould of kept an eye on the traffic lights

I doubt that the taxi driver was faulty, by driving on the tramway rails when a tram is approaching.

Or didn't he respect the give-way, or the red traffic light ?

So it is not the tram being guilty!

Good god this bloke will get an absolute fortune in compensation. Innocent passenger loses eye? Will be the taxi's insurance firm's biggest claim!

i cant stop thinking of that poor man who lost his eye none of this was his fault and now he will pay for it for the rest of his life not the taxi driver as he walked away from it on harmed are prayers are with the passenger and his family

yet again, another tram incident, this time with a poor innocent passenger of the taxi being the only victim. it's about time the authorities took action against taxi drivers(black and private hire) for the way they suddenly do u turns in the middle of a busy street, or just suddenly stop with no indication. red lights mean stop. trams have right of way at all times. many a time i've seen bus drivers have to do emergency stops and blast their horns because of cabbies. i've even seen some bus drivers think sod it and hit the taxi's(wrong in theory, but maybe it'll teach cab drivers a lesson).

i remember going to old trafford to watch england play austria, and the driver of the bus i was on moved off, quite rightly so, and in the process, took a black cabs near side passenger door clean off, because the cab driver allowed the passengers to get out in the middle of a major road. well done bus driver. this taxi driver though, should loose his taxi licence, and ban him from driving for life. and instead of the insurance paying the poor passenger out, which they will have to, the cabbie should pay up out of his own pocket.

who said it was the taxi drivers fault ? if it was then im sure the men would have the story on the front page as we all know how tram biased they are. i saw the aftermath of this accident whilst the car and tram where still in the position they came to rest and immediately came to the conclusion that the tram had pushed this car a large distance concidering it should have only been doing 30 mph at most and should have been doing less if it was being driven in a safe manner concidering the signal would have been at danger on aproach, proffesional train drivers are restricted to 20 mph at 200 yards from any danger signal ?. if the tram had been travelling at a safe speed and the brakes had been applied to emergency then i can not see how the car was pushed sideways for such a large distance, it did not even stop as it pushed the car over the bollards which wher ripped from the ground. but i suppose we will never find out as trams are not fitted with data recorders or monitored for excess speed but then again neither is the taxi.

you only have to stand at a junction where trams cross the road to see cars constantly jumping red lights (that go red well before the tram reaches the cross over) if the tram has pushed the taxi, that clearly indicates that the taxi was in the wrong. the highway code does state that trams have right of way over other traffic. why you feel the need to defend the taxi driver i'll never know.

If the taxi driver is anything like the taxi drivers in Grimsby and the rest of the country then he/she will have probably been under pressure to get to the next fare to earn more money but more money will not replace this poor innocent passengers eye and repair the trauma that he and his family have had to go through and will have to go through for the rest of their lives, in my opinion the driver should (if found to be guilty) taken off the road permanently and locked away for many years for attempted manslaughter and the suffering and disfigurement of this innocent individual!

Me stockport, what are you dribbling on about? trams ARE fitted with data recorders called OTMR's they record speed, route code, brake and emergency brake action etc etc, we are restricted to 30 in city centre but that is never achieved!! most we'll do is 20,it would seem you are implying that the tram driver was speeding and not obeying signals that is totally out of order! and you quoting speed and stopping distances for trains leads me to believe you are a train driver in which case thanks for your so called support!!, yes the trams can stop pretty quick but only if us drivers are given enough time to react, if a car, bus, lorry or pedestrian pull / walk across right in front of us while we r moving then we are bound to hit them!! and in this case it was a taxi ( no surprise there ) only thing is an innocent passenger loses his eye!!! So dont be havin a pop at us m8! we have rules and regs and they are followed! its idiot drivers and suicidal pedestrians that need to be looked at!...... check your loyalty
