THEY'RE nine tearaway teens from Greater Manchester who were given the biggest challenge of their lives.

The girls were transformed into beauty queens - in just six weeks. Out went the tracksuits and bad language. In came poise, new life skills - and posh frocks. One went on to represent England in the biggest teen pageant in America - Miss Teen International - and most had their lives changed.

The "mischievous Manchester maidens" took part in a TV series called Asbo Teen To Beauty Queen.

Former American beauty queen Michelle Fryatt met them at a Manchester community centre to reveal their mission.

Rachel Stewart, 18, of Ardwick, was spotted by the TV team as they toured Greater Manchester looking for potential candidates.

She said: "They found me. I was outside the pub drinking. I wasn't really interested at first. But it seemed fun. I was just hanging around on streets doing nothing and I was bored."

The series opens with the girls' attempts to "glam up". Some only had tracksuits in their wardrobes.

Michelle set the group a series of challenges designed to reduce them to three finalists.

Only one girl was actually the subject of an Asbo.

Laura Wilde, 17, of Eccles, was issued with a two-year order at the beginning of this year but has since changed her ways.

The other teens are: Rachel Stewart, Pavia Ward, Ellen Murphy, Neisha Berryman, Ashlie Robinson, Kerry Turner, Sarah Snabities and Elena Demetri.

More yobs given preferential treatment !!!!! makeovers ? trips to America ? What next ? All to make a programme I certainly won't watch.

I pity the good, hardworking kids of today who get nothing for their efforts.

Why should those who are tearaways be treated? arent we supposed to punish those who are the tearaways and treat the ones who arent running riot, or with asbo's?? i think its disgusting the way people are treated and molly-coddled because they have done something wrong. we shoould acknowledge the ones who are well behaved and dont get in trouble instead of acknowledging and giving attention to those who are out causing trouble

Alison, Kat and Ms D, I couldnt agree more! I would have given anything to have had an opportunity like that when i was a teenager. I was a good kid though, went to school and didnt hang around the streets terrorising people.....Find the nice kids who have nothing and treat them instead!

another symptom of our sick society - glorifying "tearaways" and treating them to trips, makeovers and putting them on TV etc while decent kids don't get a look in. I won't be tuning in, thanks very much. its getting so that being a lowlife is the norm.

I went to school with Pavia, and we were very close - one of the girls featured - this show certainly has provide them with an oppotunity they otherwise wouldn't have had!

my daughter is one of the "good girls", and has had to bend over backwards and put a lot of time, effort, and most of all- money, into doing beauty pageants. It paid off and she got into miss england this year, but, i agree with what others are saying- why should she have to slog hard for it because she is a normal kid when she,d get it handed to her on a plate if she was "bad". It doesnt exactly give them much incentive to be law-abiding citizens does it?

Just seen first show - brilliant.
Laura has got to be the winner- even in her trackies you can see her underlying beauty and she has a lovely lovely personality as well. She may be tough on the outside but its so obvious inside she is a caring feminine young lady. Whatever happens hope her life turns out great - she deserves it.

I think the show is a good idea, and i had a behaivual problem, always getting into trouble by the police, when i was 13 to 16, but now have turned my life around truly.

I would rather all these girls stayed precisely as they are than let that brainless American woman turn them into mindless plastic Barbie clones like we saw in the film from America. At first I thought a fun programme. Then I thought how sad I was for believing that someones bad behaviour was what I was using for entertainment. No wonder society is screwed. These girls needed someone to believe in them. Then maybe they would have made different choices in life ??? I hope Laura wins she looked so happy when she was given those flowers.

Thank Goodness. A show trying to change people to learn to achieve more for themselves inside and not just superficial skin deep rubbish. Some of these girls seem to have hidden depths which they are probably surprised at themselves! Some are becoming quite endearing already. (I love Laura. She is embracing the experience with such enthusiasm). Give them some credit. I deal with youths like this all the time and some have made enormous leaps out of the gutter and have found strength in themselves that was dormant before the beauty queen took charge.

You must be kidding me! Most of those excuses for human beings need a good kick up the jacksy, most of them can't even string a sentence together let alone represent England in a beauty pageant as elegent, sophisticated, beautiful young ladies!! What an embarrassment! There must be millions of teenagers in this country far more deserving of a place, and with a lot more enthusiasm. Pah, TV rubbish for the cerebrally challenged!

I think is such a great programme they doing for those girls and i always saw Rachel in town and she was the type of geirl that you would look at her and get scared because of her attitude but fortunately i got to know her better and she is the best of the best she just needs help and attention. Rachel is such a beautiful girl and i was quite dissapointed seen her messing with her life the way she did and when i saw this program it made me very happy because at least she would change for good. Even when she was answering her questions after she done it, she told the man that she wished she could go back there and do it right by showing them what she is capable of doing. RACHEL TO WIN SHE NEEDS IT TRUST ME..
